Mario Kart Racing Lab
We race, time our laps and use the results to learn real math: speed, distance, data and strategy. Students race together in a private group on Nintendo Switch. Win or lose, every racer congratulates the others at the finish line.
- Ongoing club
- 1 live class a week
- 1 hour
- Grouped by age
- $130 / month
What students learn
Race it. Time it. Graph it.
Every race creates data. Students learn to collect it, read it and use it to get better.
Speed, distance and time
Why the shortcut is faster. Younger racers compare and explain. Older racers calculate averages and rates.
Data and graphs
Lap times go into tally charts, bar graphs or spreadsheets, and students look for patterns.
Strategy
Choosing a kart setup, planning a racing line and testing one change at a time.
Sportsmanship
Losing kindly, winning kindly and cheering for the racer who improved most.
Online safety
Private rooms with our group only, friend codes shared by the Guide and no public play.
A month in the club
One question for each race day
Each week starts with a question students answer with their own race data.
- Week 1
How fast is a lap?
Time three laps and find the fastest, slowest and middle.
- Week 2
Does the kart matter?
Change one part of the setup and compare the results.
- Week 3
Shortcut or not?
Test a route twice and measure the difference.
- Week 4
Grand Prix and graph
Race a full cup, graph the results and celebrate personal bests.
Every class
What a class looks like
- 5 min
Pit stop
Check-in, the day’s question and a sportsmanship reminder.
- 10 min
Math warm-up
A short lesson on the idea we will measure today.
- 30 min
Race and record
Private races, with each racer tracking their own times.
- 15 min
Data debrief
We compare results, graph them and name the most improved racer.
Who it is for
A good fit if…
- Students who love racing games
- Learners who enjoy numbers, records and personal bests
- Students practicing being a good winner and a good loser
- Families looking for screen time with real learning in it
Before class
What you need
- A Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Mario Kart World
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play, set up by a parent
- A second device with a camera and microphone for our video call
- Paper and pencil, or a simple spreadsheet for older students
The Montessori way
Students learn math from their own experience first, then name and record it. Each racer works toward their own best time, not someone else’s. Cheering for one another is part of the lesson.
Questions families ask
Good to know
Which game do we need?
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Mario Kart World. We group racers by game so everyone can join the same room.
Is online play safe?
We race only in private rooms with our group. Parents set up the account, and the Guide shares room codes in class.
My child is new to the game. Is that okay?
Yes. Every racer competes against their own best time, so new players improve quickly.
