Community Building Circles

Circle practice that builds healthy relationships, honest conversation and fairness. Children sit in a circle, pass a talking piece and learn to listen, speak from the heart and work things out together. There are no grades and no pressure.

In our circle

Every voice is heard

Whoever holds the talking piece speaks, and everyone else listens. The Guide keeps the circle kind, safe and welcoming.

01

Take turns

The talking piece goes around so every voice is heard.

02

Speak from the heart

Children say what is true for them, and it is always fine to pass.

03

Listen with care

We listen to understand, not to get ready to answer.

04

Make things right

When something goes wrong, the circle works it out together with the restorative questions.

Week by week

Four weeks of circles

Each week adds one skill. By the end, children can hold a circle and use it to solve a real problem.

  1. Week 1

    Building our circle

We meet each other, choose a talking piece and write our circle agreements together.

  2. Week 2

    Real talk, real listening

We practice speaking honestly about ourselves and listening without interrupting.

  3. Week 3

    What is fair?

We explore the difference between fair and equal, and decide together how to share and take turns.

  4. Week 4

    Working it out

We use the restorative questions on a pretend conflict and plan a repair.

Every class

What a class looks like

  1. 5 min

    Opening

A breath, a song or a short reading to settle in.

  2. 10 min

    Check-in round

Everyone shares one word or a short answer.

  3. 20 min

    Main round

A deeper question or a short practice activity.

  4. 15 min

    Connection

A cooperative game or small project that helps the group work together.

  5. 10 min

    Closing

One thing each child is taking with them today.

Who it is for

A good fit if…

  • Children ages 6–11, grouped so younger and older children both thrive
  • Quieter children who want a gentle, structured way to speak up
  • Children who want tools for disagreements with friends or siblings

Before class

What you need

  • A device with a camera and microphone in a quiet spot
  • A small object to use as a talking piece, such as a stone or shell
  • Paper and crayons for the circle agreement

The Montessori way

Circle practice is grace and courtesy in action. Children practice real social skills with real peers, the Guide models calmly, and the group writes its own agreements, so the community belongs to the children.

Questions families ask

Good to know

Does my child have to share personal things?

No. Every child can pass at any time. Questions are about everyday life, not private matters.

How is this different from the Kindness Circle?

Community Building Circles focus on fairness, group decisions and working out conflict. The Kindness Circle is a gentler weekly feelings check-in.

Can siblings join together?

Yes, when they are in the same age group. Send us a question below and we will help place them.

Is this therapy?

No. It is a social and emotional learning circle led by an educator.
